Mathematical! Shawl

Image: The image shows an East Asian woman with purple hair posing with a large knit shawl in the woods. She is wearing dark gray stockings with a cable motif, a brown, plaid pinafore dress, and a persimmon orange sweater. Her outstretched arms hold a long, boomerang shawl in shades of pink-terracotta and pale yellow. The shawl features alternating sections of squishy yellow garter stitch and airy pink-terracotta eyelet lace. The shawl finishes with alternating rows of the two colors and alternating mini-tassels that add a bit of whimsy.

The Mathematical! Shawl is my response to all of those exponential charts we’ve been obsessing over. During the last several months, I noticed that I had developed an unhealthy obsession with looking at pandemic reports, many of them featuring frighteningly exponential growth. While it’s important for us to stay informed, I began to realize that I needed to take a break for my own sanity. Since my brain was already stuck on the concept of exponential growth, I incorporated that into this design, because pandemic humor keeps me sane.

Using Camellia Fiber Company’s oh-so-soft Sylvan base in the Terracotta and Ochre colorways, this shawl features simple eyelet lace alternating with squishy garter rows to produce a drapey boomerang shawl perfect for bundling up in. The (optional) finishing touches of mini-tassels adds a bit of whimsy to a simple and easy-to-style accessory.

DETAILS
Sizes: One size, but the pattern may easily be modified by adding or subtracting sections.

Yarn: 2 colors of fingering weight yarn.
C1: 260 yards
C2: 260 yards

Recommended Yarn: Camellia Fiber Company’s Sylvan.
Sample is knit in the colorways Terracotta and Ochre.

If using stash yarns, please consider the fiber content and ply of your yarns. A plumper fingering weight yarn will result in a squisher shawl, while a sleeker yarn will result in a drapier fabric.

This pattern is designed to suit a wide variety of yarns, whether it be hand-spun or big box acrylic. It all depends on your personal preference and what you envision for the finished project!

Needles: Circular needles in US 6 (4.0mm).

Gauge: Gauge is not critical, but should approximate to 20 stitches and 34rows after blocking for 4 inches squared in garter stitch, knit flat.
